    • Karavaki (Christmas Boat Decoration): Reflecting Greece’s strong maritime heritage, many coastal families decorate small boats instead of or alongside Christmas trees. This custom pays homage to the nation’s connection to the sea and serves as a unique festive symbol.
    • Gift-Giving on New Year’s Day: In Greece, gifts are exchanged not on Christmas but on New Year’s Day. Children eagerly await presents from Saint Basil, while families come together to exchange gifts and welcome the new year with warmth and joy.
    • Podariko: An age-old New Year custom, Podariko involves selecting the first person to enter a home on January 1st carefully. Ideally, a lucky person or a child steps in with their right foot first, ensuring good luck and positive energy for the household.
    • Agios Vasilios (the Greek Santa Claus):  Also known as Saint Basil the Great, is a 4th-century bishop known for his theological contributions and care for the poor. In Greece, his feast day on January 1st is celebrated and is the equivalent of Santa Claus in Greek.
    • Epiphany Celebration – Blessing of the Waters: On January 6th, Greeks celebrate the Epiphany, or “Theophania,” to mark Jesus Christ’s baptism in the Jordan River. A priest blesses a local body of water, and daring swimmers dive to retrieve a cross cast into the water, symbolizing renewal and spiritual cleansing.
    • Vasilopita (St Basils’ Pie): Greek New Year’s cake named after Saint Basil the Great. Traditionally cut at midnight on New Year’s Eve, it includes a hidden coin called “flouri” symbolizing good luck for the person who finds it. The cake’s slices are shared with blessings for prosperity and joy in the coming year
    • Kourabiedes & Melomakarona: No Greek Christmas is complete without these traditional treats. Kourabiedes, buttery crescent-shaped cookies dusted with powdered sugar, and Melomakarona, honey-soaked cookies spiced with cinnamon and topped with walnuts, are the hallmark of Greek holiday feasting.
    • Breaking pomegranates: A pomegranate is smashed on New Year’s Day at the doorstep of homes, a ritual believed to bring abundance and prosperity. The scattering of the seeds symbolizes blessings and good fortune for the year ahead.
